NATO, few people know what this international organization actually does. Still, our security policy is largely determined by our membership of NATO. For a country like Belgium, this membership involves important consequences; Belgium is taking part in the war in Afghanistan, is storing nuclear weapons at the military base in Kleine Brogel, is transporting - via its railways, harbours and airports - US military equipment to Irak, etc. NATO considers military interventions all over the world as one of its core businesses. The war in Afghanistan demonstrates what that means: delivering democracy through the bombs hatch of a fighter plane.
Vredesactie intervenes with non-violent direct actions, as a military alliance which operates globally, possesses nuclear arms and is prepared to strike first, is a danger for world peace.
25th November 2006: Action conference and NATO counter-summit
NATO meets in Riga on 28th-29th November to make the first steps to transform NATO into a global military alliance with nuclear arms. Anti-nuclear groups and groups opposed to NATO’s militarised globalisation meet in Brussels on 25th November to discuss actions to counter military globalisation and interventionism and to get rid of nuclear weapons.
