Bombspotting : Now or Never!

2010 is a crucial year for nuclear disarmament. On the military base of Kleine Brogel, there are estimated to be around 20 NATO nuclear weapons. Belgian pilotes are trained to use them. If we ever want to get rid of those nuclear weapons, the Belgian government has to take initiatives now. It's now or never. We aren't a part of the negociations, but we can make sure that the illegal nuclear weapon strategy doesn't go on undisturbed.

April 3rd will be a European Day of Action to ban nuclear weapons. Mass actions will take place at every European NATO nuclear weapons base in Germany, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Belgium.

Holy man is bombspotter
Saint Nicolas (a local holy man, who comes around the 6th of december, gives presents to good children and punishes children who behaved badly by putting them in his bag) and four of his helpers entered the airforce base of Kleine Brogel on the 4th of december. They wanted to put the US nuclear weapons in their bag. The Saint was very displeased about his arrest and asked for help from other people, thereby giving the signal to start a series of Bombspotting actions.

The European peace movement is saying STOP to NATO, with a series of non-violent actions. Vredesactie is organizing transport to the action camp in France.

War starts from Europe
14-15 November 2008: European day of action against military intervention infrastructure.
Europe is at war. The bombs are not falling in Europe. They are falling several thousands of km away in Iraq and Afghanistan. But still war is waged from Europe. Europe serves as a launch pad for military interventions worldwide. The frameworks differ: NATO, EU, US coalition of the willing, UN. The targets also vary: Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Chad, etc. But the departure points don’t: military bases and civilian airports and harbours in Europe.
We call for a European day of nonviolent direct action against war on 14-15 November 2008 against military intervention infrastructure.
War Starts from Europe. Let's Stop War from Europe. Take action at your local military bases and installations used for military interventions! Let’s resist military globalisation together!

Bombspotters block Faslane
17 September. Belgian Bombspotters nonviolently block the entrance of Faslane naval base, where UK nuclear submarines are deployed. 8 Bombspotters get arrested.

Bring nuclear weapons before the court
Nuclear weapons are as criminal in NATO states as they are in North-Korea or Iran. Bring nuclear weapons before the court: file a complaint against NATO's nuclear policy!

25th November 2006: Action conference and NATO counter-summit
NATO meets in Riga on 28th-29th November to make the first steps to transform NATO into a global military alliance with nuclear arms. Anti-nuclear groups and groups opposed to NATO’s militarised globalisation meet in Brussels on 25th November to discuss actions to counter military globalisation and interventionism and to get rid of nuclear weapons.

Bombspotting went to France
A broad coalition of French peace organisations organised on 23rd-24th September a first civil inspection of the Centre d'Essai des Landes (Biscarosse, near Bordeaux), where the new M51-missiles are tested. Bombspotting went to France and participated in this action.

Nuclear weapons: 10 years illegal
Today, 8th July 2006, is exactly 10 years since the International Court of Justice in the Hague, the highest court in the world, issued an advisory opinion on the question: “Are nuclear weapons in contravention of International Law?”
For the past 10 years it has been clear that all existing nuclear weapons are illegal. However, there are still United States nuclear weapons based in Belgium, at the NATO airbase of Kleine Brogel.

Today, 8th July 2006, Belgium has been breaching international law for 10 years, NATO has been using an illegal nuclear strategy for 10 years, and has refused to bring itself into line with international law.
If nuclear weapons are illegal, they must be removed. For this reason, Forum voor Vredesactie and the Bombspotting campaign organised 10 actions at 10 different places in Belgium that are responsible for supporting the illegal NATO nuclear weapon strategy.
